Reading Workshop
Welcome to the 5th Grade Reading Workshop! We will be covering a lot this year in Reading and becoming independent and goal setting readers. Reading Workshop will cover several different areas this year including reading skills, spelling, and vocabulary. A typical Reading Workshop consists of a short mini-lesson on a reading skill, strategy, or concept related to our current unit of study. That will be followed by time to independent read, work in pairs or individually, and guided reading groups.
Lucy Calkins
This year our Reading Workshop will follow along with Lucy Calkins Units of Study for Teaching Reading. This is a research-based program that emphasizes building the individual reader and meeting the needs of all learners. We will also be using the Scott Foresman and Words Their Way programs to strenghten and enhance our Reading Program.
40 Book Challenge
Fifth graders will also be participating in the 40 Book Challenge again this year. This means they will be expected to read a lot (both in and out of school) from a wide variety of genres and authors. Students will have to keep track of their reading using logs and other charts. Our goal is for all fifth graders to complete the 40 Book Challenge this year!
